What is ISTDP?

Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), developed by Habib Davanloo, is a well-researched, evidence-based treatment. Over the past four decades, more than 200 empirical studies—including randomized controlled trials and several meta-analyses—have demonstrated its effectiveness for patients, located on the spectrum of structural neurosis. The effectiveness of this evidence based therapy, together with its time-limited and cost-effective nature, makes ISTDP particularly relevant for mental health professionals in Spain seeking effective and research-supported therapy for their patients in public and private healthcare settings.

Focus of the workshop

The presenters at this 3-day workshop will focus on an introduction of theory and techniques of Davanloo´s ISTDP, and on the different aspects of the process of establishing and maintaining a working alliance with our patients. Theory and practice will be elaborated upon via PowerPoint presentations, via audiovisual vignettes of ISTDP therapies, via discussion and role play.
Davanloo, the creator of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), refers to the variables within the patient that influence the establishment and quality of a working alliance as forces operating against the therapeutic process and those in favour of the therapeutic process. The sadistic superego which demands suffering and the patient´s conscious/unconscious resistance operate against the therapeutic process, while the repressed impulses and feelings (seeking an outlet and expression) and the patient´s conscious willingness to cooperate with the therapist, to face the truth, to drop defenses operate in favour of the therapeutic process.
As most of our patients come to the Initial Interview with high superego pathology, they will defeat any intimate relationship to a certain degree. Thus it is mainly up to the therapist, who is supposed to have the necessary relational and technical skills, to establish a working alliance with his patient. Therefore, the therapist´s skills in at least establishing such an alliance are central. Once such an alliance is established, both patient´s and therapist´s contributions to the alliance are equally responsible for safeguarding and maintaining the working alliance while steadily increasing its quality.
The therapist´s understanding of the concept of the conscious/unconscious working alliance is thus crucial in the therapeutic process, leading to a success or failure of psychotherapy, and in this case of ISTDP.
